Major Events

WCS events are held year-round across the United States, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Most events run three to five days over a weekend and combine workshops, social dancing, and competitions. Those that are WSDC-registered award points toward division advancement; smaller local events may or may not be registered.

This page lists long-running, internationally-attended events as a reference. It is not a calendar — dates and venues change year to year. Confirm details with the event website before traveling or registering.

What "WSDC-registered" means

A registered event has been certified by the World Swing Dance Council to award points toward divisional advancement. Points come from finaling in Jack & Jill and Strictly Swing contests; the number awarded scales with the event size and the placement earned. Events that are not registered may still host high-quality competitions, but the results do not affect WSDC standing.

See Competitions → The WSDC points system for how points map to divisions.

United States

U.S. Open Swing Dance Championships

California-based; the oldest continuously-running championship event in the dance and a destination for routine divisions in particular. The Classic and Showcase finals at the Open are often used as a yardstick for the year's choreographic state of the art.

The Open Swing Dance Championships ("The Open")

A separate event from the U.S. Open Swing Dance Championships, despite the similar name. Pay attention to the full title when comparing rosters or event histories.

Capital Swing

Held in the Washington, D.C. area. Long-running, well-attended Jack & Jill field; a popular early-year event for points.

Liberty Swing

New Jersey–based event with a substantial Strictly Swing field. Often draws a mix of East Coast and international competitors.

Boogie by the Bay

San Francisco Bay Area event with deep roots in the California scene.

MADjam

Washington, D.C. area event historically known for strong routine divisions in addition to its competition slate.

Swingtacular

Florida-based; one of the larger Southeast events on the calendar.

Summer Hummer

Long-running summer event; the exact host city has varied over the years.

Sea to Sky

Pacific Northwest event.

Swing Fling

Established mid-Atlantic event.

Outside the United States

Budafest

Budapest, Hungary. One of the largest WCS events in Europe; draws a predominantly European and Asian field.

Open d'Espagne

Spain-based; one of several long-running European championships.

Asia Pacific WCS events

The dance has an active competitive scene across Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea. WSDC-registered events are held annually in several of these countries; check the WSDC event registry for current listings.

Pro-Am and routine-focused events

A number of events specialize in routine divisions (Classic, Showcase, Pro-Am, Team) and draw a different crowd than primarily-J&J events. The U.S. Open and MADjam are historically the most associated with this focus, though most large events now include at least a Pro-Am field.

This list is intentionally conservative — it covers events with a long enough track record to have stable identifying information. If you'd like to add a regional event, please open a PR with the event's website, the year it was founded, and (where applicable) its WSDC registration status. See the contribution guide.
